Jean Paul Gaultier Spring Summer 1999 “Venus de Milo” sheer mesh dress. A defining example from one of Gaultier’s most conceptually celebrated collections, exploring the tension between the clothed and “naked” body through illusion, structure, and drape. Constructed in printed sheer mesh with sculptural contouring throughout, the design reflects the collection’s dialogue between classical sculpture and the body as a constructed form.
The collection challenged traditional ideas of perfection and naturalism, positioning dress not simply as adornment, but as composition and transformation. Worn on the runway by Vanessa-Mae, the “Venus de Milo” series remains one of the house’s most recognizable late-1990s works.
